REMARKS made by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in Parliament this week alluding to the 2006 coup have copped strong criticisms from Opposition and a political party.

In a loud and uncontrolled exchange between Government and Opposition members following questions on the future directions of indigenous institutions in the country, and in response to the use of the word coup, Mr Bainimarama responded: “We can talk about coups until the cows come home, you will never get there.

“It is because of the coup that I conducted, that you are sitting here,” Mr Bainimarama told the House on Tuesday.

In response, Opposition member Roko Tupou Draunidalo said the Prime Minister was in Parliament because of the coup.

“He (PM) is in Parliament because of the coup he conducted in 2006. Otherwise, he would have been out of the House,” Ms Draunidalo said. Opposition member Professor Biman Prasad said the Prime Minister’s comments were “disgusting and a laughing matter”.

Similar sentiments were also shared by Opposition member Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

“It is like the pot calling the kettle black,” Ratu Naiqama said in his response to comments made by Mr Bainimarama.

Fiji Labour Party president Lavinia Padarath in a statement said Mr Bainimarama was speaking as though he had done Fiji a great favour by staging the coup. This blog insist that by right, Baini should be in Jail and not in Parliament.
