TOTAL of 420 children below the age of five died of malnutrition last year, a Save the Children Fiji study revealed.

And this year, the organisation will aim to halve the current statistics.

SC Fiji CEO Raijeli Nicole said it was time Fijians all took a stand to ensure that statistic did not get any higher.

“We’re really hoping to halve that number so basically it’s a challenge to everyone — which 200 kids are you going to allow to die?” Mrs Nicole said in an interview on Friday morning.

“It’s important that we all start communicating with one another and that’s what we’re going to be working on a lot this year.”

She explained that it was beneficial for SC Fiji to have a good working relationship on the ground in communities and villages, which she hoped would make better use of these contacts through a partnership with the Ministry of Health.

“There are a lot of barriers with that, but we’ve got a lot of good relationships on the ground and we’re really happy to strengthen the ties we have with the Ministry of Health and government bodies as well.

“It’s really important that we don’t forget the children because if you ask them about this issue, they know exactly what they need — they just really need to be included,” she added.
