Facts on poverty in Fiji and the state of the economy

October 5, 2010

Professor Wadan Narsey

The economy is in very bad shape, and will be much worse within the next six months when the full scale of FSC losses become obvious- Fiji tax-payers stand to lose more than $100 million, FNPF more than $55 million and Reserve Bank more than $22 million.  Tax-payers may have to inject another $50 to $100 million merely to keep FSC solvent and maintain the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of rural people dependent on the sugar industry.  Total cost, worst case scenario, may amount to more than the costs of the NBF disaster.
