It seems the authorities are now using the army to suppress and intimidate the cane farming community. With the recent dissolution of the Sugar Cane Growers Council, the farmers have now lost their last line of legitimate defence and protection and must feel vulnerable and insecure.

In an incident last week, a cane cutting gang in Lautoka was harassed and brutalised by soldiers following the breakout of two cane fires in their area. The two cane farms caught fire on the 29th and 30th of September. Army personnel visited the farms and tried to force the cane cutting gang to name the person who set the farms on fire. When they insisted they did not know, the gang was taken to the army camp. Two of the cane cutters were brutally assaulted and the rest made to run around the camp. Among the cutters were several quite elderly individuals who were also forced to run.

The cane cutters are now so scared, they do not want to cut cane. There are other reports of the Sugar Ministry’s task force team using soldiers to intimidate and harass cane farmers, ordering them not to burn cane or criticise the FSC and the regime.

This is similar to what soldiers were doing after the second coup in 1987 when they went around the cane belt threatening and harassing cane farmers. This Lautoka case cannot be seen as an isolated incident because it will inevitably send a nationwide tremor of fear amongst the farming community invoking the macabre images that we have seen in many of the despotic states of Africa.

It’s really time someone in Fiji, got all this torture on video and downloaded on youtube or sent to the Hague to have these fuckers put on trial for crimes against Humanity.
It would really put a shiver up the spines of people intending to holiday in that God forsaken land once and for all.
Imagine the damage it could do to the tourist industry and the lost revenue to Frank and Co.
please, somebody send something reputable through to amnesty international and the tourist operators in Australia and New Zealand, as well as the many current affairs programmes here.
I’ll try and spread the news tonight, starting with the Today show in Sydney.

The depiction above sure looks “FAKE” , a pathetic piece of frabricating the truth. This is a sign of real ‘DESPARADO” for political legitimacy. Come on people, we are not that “STUPID”.
